Essay on Climate Change

Climate change has become one of the major threats to the modern world. With urbanization we have come across a major threat it poses which is Climate change. Climate change is not just the melting of ice but extreme weather changes taking place in every part of the world. The temperature of Earth has been rising 1 degree per year which is an alarming rate. The water levels due to the melting of polar ice are rising and many coastal areas are on the verge of submerging underwater. The ecosystem is severely affected as changing drastically due to climate change. Loss of flora and fauna both are seen due to climate change. In fact, many species are on the brink of extinction due to this.

Climate change is also referred to as global warming. It means the long-term changes in the Earth’s temperature, weather patterns, and ecosystems that are occurring as a result of human activity. The major reason for climate change is the emission of greenhouse gases. Gases like carbon dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides, Sulphur Dioxide and methane, trap the incoming solar radiation from the sun in the atmosphere due to which the temperature of the earth’s surface keeps on rising which leads to the warming effect. This warming effect results in the melting of polar ice and the loss of habitat for polar animals. Not only these severe heat waves are seen in the equatorial region.

Conditions like drought have become common in these regions. Recently only Kenya suffered miserably due to its severe drought conditions. Animals come closer to the brink of extinction. Which disturbs the whole food web and food chain. Floods have become another severe natural disaster due to climate change. A rainfall pattern change is observed in many areas which results in floods. With frequent floods, high irregular rainfall and storms the loss of vegetation, infrastructure, and lives have become common. The consequences of climate change are widespread and can have significant impacts on human health and the economy of humans.

The major cause of climate change is the emissions of greenhouse gases which are caused by the burning of fossil fuels like petrol, petroleum, coal, diesel, plastic, rubber etc. These fuels have become part of our day-to-day activities. The total dependency on these fossil fuels from the onset of the industrial revolution has become a major source of global warming. The smoke released from different means of transportation vehicles, factories, burning activities, and volcanic eruption all causes the trapping of solar radiation which rises the temperature of the earth’s surface. Deforestation increases the effect of global warming as a large number of trees are being cut down for clearance of land which results in increased levels of carbon dioxide.

To save our planet from the dire consequences of climate change many steps should be taken like afforestation which is the process of planting trees so that deforestation can be checked as trees can help to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Less dependency on fossil fuels should be promoted. The use of electric vehicles in place of petrol and diesel vehicles should be the goal. The focus should be towards green energy. Reuse, Recycling and Reducing should be the motive of every citizen. Changes in agricultural practices, such as crop selection and irrigation methods, can help to ensure food security in the face of changing weather patterns.

To combat the change in the environment we have to work at a global level. United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was established in 1992 to combat the change in climate at a global level. UNFCCC launched a legal agreement that is The Paris Agreement to tackle the problem of global warming in 2015. This was adopted by 197 countries. Despite the progress that has been made in recent years, there is still much work to be done to address the impacts of climate change.

In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, more research and development are needed in the area of green energy so that our dependency on fossil fuels can come to zero. To tackle climate change work, the general public should be educated at the local level. Measures should be taken by every citizen to reduce their carbon footprints.

In conclusion, climate change is an urgent matter that should be addressed at not just the global level but at local levels also. The impact of climate change is deadly and dire and the survival of humans will come into question if soon no steps are taken towards this cause. Steps should be taken how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and not at global levels but at local individual levels after all the Earth is home to each one of us and it is our collective duty to save it.
