IPL Final 2008: RR vs CSK

Played on 1 June 2008 in DY Patil Stadium of Mumbai, Maharashtra, was a medium-scored game but a complete thriller which was taken to the last ball. Chennai reached the finals under the constructive captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. They batted first and with a quick performance of 43(30) from their star young player, Suresh Raina, managed to establish a score of 163 in 20 overs after losing 5 wickets. Rajasthan Royals witnessed fighting innings from Yusuf Pathan who scored 56 runs in 39 balls while hitting 3 boundaries and 4 balls out of the park. Soon, he was run out by Raina and the game reached an interesting level as RR did not have many wickets in hand since they lost 7. However, in a close last ball match, Rajasthan managed to score 164 and win their first and only title in 2008 under the captaincy of the star Australian Cricketer, Shane Warne.

IPL Final 2009: DC vs RCB

The Season 2 match was played between Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore. DC and RCB fought in a T20 game on 24 May 2009 in Imperial Wanderers Stadium of South Africa. The former batted first and scored 143 runs in 20 overs after losing 6 wickets in the process. Herschelle Gibbs was not out and led his team to a defendable total by contributing 53 of 48 balls. In the second innings, the Deccan Chargers’ ballers were able to pick quick wickets and restrict the batsmen such that they are unable to score much. With a collective effort, RCB managed to score 137 while they lost 9 wickets in 20 overs. Their score was not enough to win and eventually, Chargers won the close match after displaying stellar bowling performances.

IPL Final 2010: CSK vs MI

After their close and disappointing defeat in the first IPL final and their failed close attempt to reach the finals in 2009, Chennai Super Kings won their first of many titles in the Indian Premier League against Mumbai Indians. They batted first and put up a score of 168 on the board with an undefeated inning of 57 off 35 from Suresh Raina, who was later joined by Albie Morkel for a quick and short 15 runs within a strike rate of 150. Even after putting in their collective efforts, Mumbai failed to chase the target of 169 since they kept losing wickets to Chennai’s strong bowling attack. The trophy was listed by Chennai on 25 April 2010.

IPL Final 2011: CSK vs RCB

Once again, Chennai made it to the finals with an envisage of defending their title only to make their dreams come true. It was a high-scoring match from the camp of Chennai as they established a magnificent total of 205 in 120 balls with Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey contributing 95 and 63 respectively. Chennai bowlers were able to defend their score as they restricted Bangalore to a score of 147 while picking 8 wickets. Ravichandran Ashwin and his magical spell with the ball provided much depth to the bowling and Chennai once again lifted the trophy and became the first team in the history of the Indian Premier League to retain the title of Winner.

IPL Final 2012: KKR vs CSK

Chennai Super Kings again made it to the finals in 2012 to fight against Kolkata Knight Riders. Chennai batted first and scored 190 runs after losing 3 wickets. It was a magnificent match with Suresh Raina giving in a stellar performance where he scored an unforgettable 73 being accompanied by Michael Hussey (54), Murali Vijay (42), and MS Dhoni (14). Despite this batting effort, they were unable to defend their title again as KKR’s Manvinder Bisla scored an explicable 89 in just 48 balls with a strike rate of 185.41 with Jacques Kallis also coming in and scoring 69 runs. With 2 balls remaining and 5 wickets in hand, Kolkata has crowned the winner for the first time.

IPL Final 2013: MI vs CSK

Being the only consistent team in the Indian Premier League, Chennai reached the final for the fifth time in 6 seasons. However, they lost miserably to the team of Mumbai who batted first and managed to put up a score of 148 runs after losing 9 wickets. Kieron Pollard contributed 60 runs off 32 balls which helped MI reach a defendable target. Nevertheless, Chennai could not chase the target and MS Dhoni stood at one end waiting for a partnership to be built. With exceptional bowling from Mumbai ballers including Malinga, Harbhajan, and Mitchell Johnson, CSK was restricted to a score of 125. MI lifted their first of 5 titles in the history of IPL on 26 May 2013 in the Eden Gardens.

IPL Final 2014: KKR vs KXIP

The match was played in M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on 1 June 2014. It was a high-scoring match with Wriddhiman Saha stepping in with magnificent innings of unbeaten 115 runs in 55 balls accompanied by Manan Vohra with 67 runs and establishing a score of 199 while losing only 4 wickets to the KKR bowling attack. However, the Kolkata batters managed to chase down with balls remaining with Manish Pandey’s valuable innings of 94 runs. A collective effort from the other batters helping in at various levels. Kolkata lifted their second title under the intelligent captaincy of Gautam Gambhir.

IPL Final 2015: MI vs CSK

Chennai and Mumbai met again on 24 May 2015 for the second time in the IPL finals. While Chennai was seeking redemption for their 2013 defeat, Mumbai moved up to establish Magnus 202 with collective performances from Lendl Simmons, Rohit Sharma, and Kieron Pollard. However, Chennai could not manage to chase down the score and with Malinga, and McClenaghan collectively picking up 5 wickets with economic bowling, Chennai was restricted to a score of 161/8 in 20 overs. Mumbai lifted the trophy for the second time at Eden Gardens.

IPL Final 2016: SRH vs RCB

On 29 May 2016, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore faced each other for a high-scoring T20 game. SRH won the toss and decided to bated first. They posted a humungous score of 208 in 20 overs against RCB with consistent performance with the bat from their Captain, David Warner. While Gayle and Kohli tried their best to chase it down, M Chinnaswamy Stadium’s pitch supported Hyderabad’s Ben Cutting who picked up two lethal wickets. Still, RCB managed to score 200 by the end of the 20th over but it was not enough to get them their first title. Sunrisers had a beautiful season under the guidance of Warner and they lifted their first ever IPL trophy as SRH.

IPL Final 2017: MI vs RPS

Mumbai Indians won their third title on 21 May 2017 in a close match with Rising Pune Supergiants which was led by Steve Smith. Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided that his team will bat first. They posted quite a low score of 129 after losing 8 wickets. They were struggling to put anything on the board when Krunal Pandya stepped in and scored 47 runs. It was seeming that the MI’s captain made the wrong choice of batting first until Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Johnson picked wickets from their end and the rest of the ballers bowled economically taking the game to the very last ball. On the last ball, Mumbai managed to defeat Pune and they lifted the trophy for the third time, most by any team in the Indian Premier League.

IPL Final 2018: CSK vs SRH

Chennai had a perfect comeback season after being banned for 2 years in the Indian Premier League. They were the table toppers in the tournament and witnessed dreamy collective effort from each player in the camp. They met Sunrisers for the finals in Wankhade Stadium on 27 May 2018. MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bowl first. They restricted Hyderabad at a score of 178/6. Kane Williamson and Yusuf Pathan gave in their best for SRH but were outperformed to an extreme level by Chennai’s Shane Watson who scored a magnificent 117 off 57 balls. Chennai chased the total with 8 wickets in hand and 9 balls to spare after Raydu ended the game with a beautiful cover drive. Chennai lifted the Indian Premier League title for the third time.

IPL Final 2019: MI vs CSK

Chennai and Mumbai are called to be the ultimate rivals of the Indian Premier League. Chennai wanted to defend their title once again after doing so in 2011 but Mumbai headed to win their fourth title. It was a close match that was taken to the last ball where MI won by 1 run. MI posted a score of 149 after losing 8 wickets at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Chennai headed to do the same and after a magnificent 80 by Shane Watson who was all set to proceed his team to the victory even after being severely bruised on the knee. However, he was run out by Krunal Pandya and the ship of Chennai sank till the last ball when they required one run to win. Shardul Thakur tried playing the ball bowled by Lasith Malinga but ended up getting run out as he proceeded to take one. MI lifted the IPL trophy for the fourth time.

IPL Final 2020: MI vs DC

In 2020, the tournament was much delayed due to COVID and the team played in a restricted bubble. In the Dubai International Stadium, Delhi headed by Shreyas Iyer and Mumbai captained by Rohit Sharma fought for the IPL trophy in the 13th edition. Delhi scored 156/7 and Mumbai chased it down with 8 balls to spare. It was the stellar performances of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan with the bat and the magical spell of Trend Boult as he just gave in 30 runs in 4 overs while picking up 3 crucial wickets. He was declared Player of the Match and Mumbai defended their title for the first time in IPL history while lifting the trophy for the fifth time.

IPL Final 2021: CSK vs KKR

The 2021 season was victorious for Chennai Super Kings as they won IPL for the fourth time in a match against Kolkata Knight Riders KKR on 15 October 2021 in Dubai International Stadium. They posted a score of 192/3 courtesy of Faf Duplesis’s stellar 86 off 59 with the bat. The Chennai bowlers struggled initially but they were able to pick up quick wickets before the situation could deteriorate. They restricted KKR 165 even after a strong opening partnership from Kolkata’s Shubhman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer. Faf was the player of the match and every baller from Chennai managed to pick up wickets when required.

IPL Final 2022: GT vs RR

The last edition of IPL was in 2022 when 2 new teams were introduced including Gujarat Titans. Hardik Pandya’s boys had a dream debut season as a team where they were the most undefeated team of the season and managed to do the same in the finals against another strong team, Rajasthan Royals. RR had the hope of winning the title again after 15 years but unfortunately, they will have to wait for more since GT outperformed them. Gujarat won on their home ground, Narendra Modi Stadium on 29 May 2022. The game was low scoring when Rajasthan posted only 130/9. Gujarat easily chased the total down in 18.1 overs after a stellar performance from their captain with both bat and ball. GT lifted the title under the mentorship of Ashish Nehra and Gary Kristen.
