Applicants who have taken both examinations of JEE Mains, January and September will be having four NTA scores for each of the paper of JEE Main. JEE Main Marking Scheme 2021
According to the marking scheme of JEE Main, the candidate will get 4 marks for every correct answer. The exam has the procedure of negative marking. So for every wrong answer, the candidate will have to lose 1 mark.
Candidates can calculate their marks by calculating the total number of correct and incorrect attempts in the OMR sheets. Calculate all the total positive and negative marks to come to a conclusion of JEE main result/scored marks. You can get the total score by deducting the total negative marks from the total positive marks. Here is the quick formula to calculate marks;
- Total positive marks = (Total correct attempts) x 4
- Total negative marks = (Total incorrect attempts) x 1
- Total JEE Main Score = Total positive marks – Total negative marks
Difference between Percentage and Percentile
Usually, JEE aspirants get confused between percentage and percentile. Both of these terms are different and so does their calculation. Let’s know what is percentage and percentile.
- Percentage: Percentage is counted based on scored marks out of 100.
- Percentile: Percentile score of a candidate represent how many applicants have scored below that candidate in an exam.
JEE Main Cut Off
NTA will release the cut off marks for JEE Main Feb session only along with the result announcement of JEE Main. The cut off details will be available on the official website of JEE Main only and applicants can check it by login with their application id and password.
Those candidates who have scored more marks than the qualifying cut off of JEE Main marks will be eligible to appear in JEE Advanced. If an applicant could not score up to the cut off marks then he/she will be disqualified for JEE Advanced. The cut off of JEE Main is prepared based on many factors like numbers of applicants, availability of seats, and past trends.
JEE Main Rank List 2021
The NTA will prepare the jee main result and rank list based on the score of four NTA exams. The scores for the first and second attempts will be merged for the compilation of result. The preparation of overall Merit List / Rank list will be based this merged marks.

How is JEE Mains inter-se merit determined?
In case two students obtained same scores, the inter-se-merit of such candidates will be determined by using a specific criterion. NTA follows the given criteria in the order of preference to break the tie between the marks of the candidates-
For B.Tech/ B.E
- Candidates scoring higher NTA scores in Mathematics will be given preference.
- Candidates scoring higher NTA score in Physics
- Candidates obtaining higher score in Chemistry will be preferred.
- Candidates older in age will be preferred.
For B.Arch/B.Planning
- Candidates obtaining higher scores in Mathematics.
- Candidates with higher NTA score in Aptitude test in paper 2.
- Candidates obtaining higher score in Drawing Test in paper 2.
- Candidates older in age.
In case resolution is not possible even after the aforementioned criteria then candidates will be given same rank.

How AIR is compiled?
JEE Main All India Ranks of the candidates will be announced soon. Lakhs of candidates appear in JEE Main exams. There are also candidates who have appeared in all the sessions of exams. To compile the ranks of such students, their best of all JEE main results will be considered.
The ranks will be prepared on the basis of cut-offs and percentile secure by the candidates. To calculate the score, NTA will use the “Normalization procedure based percentile score”.
The exam was conducted in multiple shifts. The scores will be calculated corresponding to the raw marks scored by the candidates in the test. These NTA scores for all the shifts will be merged for the compilation of result and preparation of ranking/ merit list. The overall result for both all the sessions exam will be published later.
This final JEE main result will include NTA score of the candidates obtained in the all the exam sessions. The rank will be comprised of All India Rank (AIR) and All India category rank.
What after JEE Main Rank (AIR) is announced?
After the release of result, announcement of the cut-off marks, counseling, and seat allocation process will start. The counseling will be conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSSA). The NTA will forward the merit and rank list to JoSSA for further proceeding.
Candidates will be allotted colleges, institutes as per their eligibility, rank, choice-filled and admission policies of the respective institutes. Mere securing a good rank does not imply that candidate will surely get a seat in their preferred college/ institute. They must also fulfill the admission requirements of the institutes they are willing to join.
Only those candidates will be eligible to take admission to the NITs, IIITs, and GCTIs who will qualify the JEE Main exam with a satisfactory rank. Only the All India Rank is used for admission through JoSSA to these institutes.
Those who want join any of the institutes have to register with the JoSSA portal first. After registration, they can fill choice for their preferred institution/ college. Mere qualifying the JEE main exam and registration at JoSSA doesn’t imply that candidates will get admission to these institutions. Every institute has its own admission criteria that candidates have to satisfy them. To know the admission criteria candidates, have to visit the official website of the institutes they are interested in joining.
JEE Main Counselling and Seat Allotment
JEE Main counseling will be conducted after the release of merit and rank list of the candidates. Counseling is a responsibility of JoSSA i.e. Joint Seat Allocation Authority. It is the only authority responsible for joint seat allocation to the qualified candidates in the participating institutes.
Candidates who will qualify the JEE Main exam can participate in the counseling. For registration and choice filling they have to visit the JoSSA portal. It is mandatory for all the candidates to register at JoSSA portal if they want to join any of the IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, etc. FAQ’s

Cut off marks are the minimum qualifying marks that you should secure to qualify the exam. Whereas percentile score represents how many candidates have obtained marks equal to or less than you. For example- You need 50 marks to qualify an exam, and you have scored 70 percentiles in the exam. In this case, 50 is the cut marks and 70 percentile means that 70 % of candidates have secure marks equal or less than you.
