Lebron comes from an underprivileged family. His mother is Gloria Marie James and Anthony McClelland is his father. He was born on 30th December 1984 in the city of Akron in the state of Ohio in the United States of America. Having a considerably long history of criminal record, his father was hardly involved in his life. Anthony McClelland was often in and out of jail for crimes like arson and theft. He was raised by his single mother after his father left when he was born. Another sad part was that her mother was only 16 years old when she got pregnant. It was her mother who was the sole breadwinner of the family.
It is believed that Gloria and Anthony were in a casual relationship and after the latter knew she was with the child, he left her to fend for herself and the child. Gloria then lived with her mother, Freda, a hairstylist and her brothers, Terry and Curt. Her mother passed away due to a heart attack, leaving 19-year-old Gloria to take the responsibility for not only her son, LeBron of 3, but also her two younger brothers. They frequently had to switch homes and live in shelters as she did not have a proper job and struggled to pay bills on time. James’ mother loved him and did all that she could to provide for her child. She once brought him a basketball and a hoop which became dearest to him.
Being Catholic, James was sent to study at St. Vincent St. Mary high school at the age of eight. Even though his mother was short, only 5 ‘5, LeBron was exceptionally tall for his age as compared to his classmates. During his school days, he was a shy kid and mostly kept to himself, he’d rather play basketball. His coach, Frank Walker, recognised his talents and took responsibility to polish his skills. But so it happened, in a white-dominated school, due to shame related to his poor status he missed 82 days of his 160 days of the school calendar.
His coach Frank and his wife Pam discovered his financial and family problems and insisted to let James move in with him for his proper training. His mother agreed and it turned out very well. He soon became the basketball prodigy in his school. Walker filled the missing place of a father figure in his life.
Later when Gloria found a stable job and an apartment to live in, LeBron, who was in middle school back then, got back with his mother. Yet, both kept a close relationship with the Walker family. He was only nine years old when Frank Walker suggested that he should play for Rec League, Summit Lake Community centre Hornet. That became the kickstart of his basketball career.
LeBron James Career
Before James got his fame, he was just another American teenager with a close group of friends who played basketball. His closest were Dru Joyce III, Sian Cotton and Willie McGee who eventually became the Fab Four. Dru Joyce’s father was their coach in the travelling youth team, Northeast Ohio Shooting Stars, they all practised at the Salvation Army gym. They became close friends and decided to go to the same high school. They became unbeatable and LeBron James’ first official team. Later Fab Four became the Fab Five after the addition of another member Romeo Travis. They even made it to the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) nationals in Orlando, Florida as the shooting stars during their middle school days.
As a basketball player, Lebron has switched many teams since he started his professional career. He made his debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers, his hometown team and played against the Sacramento kings. At the end of the season, he was named the “NBA Rookie of the year award” in the year 2003-04. He also became the first from the team to receive such a designation. Yet, they couldn’t make it to the playoffs that year. Years went by and Lebron settled many records. In the year 2006, they finally made it to the playoffs under his leadership. By the end of the year 2007-8 James was declared the “All-Star Game MVP (Most Valuable Player)” twice. But in the year 2009-10 when they lost the tournament, the hometown crowd cried boos at him and blamed him harshly for not doing his best.
Ultimately James left the Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat. A lot of controversies followed but he won two National Basketball Association (NBA) championships for the Miami Heat. He won his third NBA championship for the Cavalries after returning back as an unrestricted free agent in 2011. In 2018, LeBron again left the Cavaliers because of severe losses. For the first time in twelve years, he could not make it to the All-NBA First Team. James has been with the LA Lakers since then.
James made his Olympic debut in the year 2004 for the national team of the United States. In 2008, he sourced 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in the final match against Spain and won USA a gold medal for the first time since 2000 and secured another gold in 2012.
