NEET Eligibility Criteria 2021: NEET is the National Eligibility Entrance Test organized by the National Testing Agency, which provides admission to the students in different medical courses for graduation. Allotment of Seats in NEET is done via various Quotas through which the seats will be filled up, based on the All India Rank in NEET 2021. The Quotas are:

  • Quota seats of State Pool
  • Quota seats of State govt.
  • Seats of AIQ (All India Quota)
  • Universities/ Deemed Universities/ Institutions of Centre.
  • Management seats/ State seats/ NRI seats in private colleges/ Universities offering courses in Ayurveda/ Dental/ Medical college/ Homeopathic/ Siddha/ Unani.

Indian/ OCI cardholders also need to qualify NEET to get enrolled in any foreign university to pursue above mentioned medical courses.

Eligibility Criteria of NEET 2021

National Eligibility

The aspirants who will be deemed eligible for NEET 2021 must be:

  • Indian Citizen
  • Overseas Citizen of India
  • Persons of Indian Origin
  • Non-Residents Indians

Age Eligibility

  • The minimum age to sit for the exam is 17 years (or he/ she should complete 17 years before the admission) and the upper age is although 25 years to give the exam a petition vide to this, is pending in the high court of Delhi, so for the upper age candidates, admissions can not be promised.
  • There are criteria for relaxation of age up to 5 years for candidates belonging to the PwD, OBC-NCL, SC, and ST categories.
  • For General- EWS/ Unreserved Category aspirants, no age relaxation is permitted.

Seat Eligibility

Such eligibility is concerned with regard to the seats in control under the State universities, central universities, deemed universities, Armed forces Medical colleges, Employees State Insurance Corporation Medical College, subjective to the rules of individual Institutions. Fulfilling the criteria, aspirants are deemed eligible to get admissions into Institutes of National Importance. Foreign Nationals should attain surety about their eligibility status through the authorities of the College or State, they wish to apply to.

Aspirants from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are eligible for 15% AIQ seats since 2018.

Who all are not eligible?

  • Aspirants from Jammu & Kashmir
  • Aspirants from Ladakh

Although students from these states can still claim eligibility and sit for the exam by submitting a Self Declaration form provided by NTA, which is necessary to be produced at subsequent steps of the admission procedure viz, counseling, and the final admission of the candidate.

NOTE: Students should be sure of claiming eligibility because under any circumstance if the claim gets concluded as untruthful. In such a case, criminal proceedings may get initiated against the candidate as well as his/ her candidature will also be canceled.

85% State Quota Eligibility

As 15% of the seats are filled up by All India Quota qualified students, the rest 85% seats are reserved for the students eligible for State Quota of NEET. The respective participating states fill up these seats by organizing State Level Counselling after the exam. To be eligible for this quota. The student/ aspirant should:

  • Should have a domicile of the state he/ she wishes to apply for the seat.
  • Should have proof of residency in the state.
  • Should have completed 10+2 or equivalent (which is a mandatory qualification) from the same state.

In addition to this, the Students/ Aspirants who wish to join the medical colleges in India but have completed their required education from any foreign country. Such students need to have 50% marks in Biology/ Biotechnology, Chemistry, Physics, and English in their 10+2 or any other equivalent passing exam. Thus, will be eligible for NEET.

Important Points to Keep in Mind

  • You need to produce the physical documents concerned with the examination passed, with required subjects and percentages. Only then, the student will be considered for admission.
  • Students with biology as an additional subject in 10+2 are eligible for MBBS entrance.
  • Students who wish to pursue any medical course in a foreign country are also liable to sit for NEET, to get admission.
  • Many Universities/ States also have their own set criteria regarding the cutoffs and admission which may vary with the standard criteria set up by the NTA. In such cases, they may provide admissions according to their own set standards.
  • To get admission into any INIs, candidates do need the minimum marks set up as the qualifying criteria by NTA to pursue MBBS.

Q. Can I give the exam if I fail in Class 12th?

A. Yes. You may sit for the exam but further processes will not be initiated if you do not pass the qualifying exam i.e. class 12th, with the required percentage.

Q. Are NIOS students eligible for NEET 2021?

A. NIOS board/ Private students’ eligibility is still dependent on the final verdict of the High Court for NEET (as the admission for NIOS Board students was allowed by the Delhi High Court last year which was challenged by the Medical Council of India).
